The interplay between pedlars, trade practices and their printed goods
This paper focuses on the close relation between itinerant print sellers (pedlars/colporteurs) and the printed material they distributed in England and the Netherlands (1750-1900). It explores how regulation (licensing, banning, censoring), socio-political circumstances (political turmoil), public trading spaces (streets, squares, bridges, locks), material devices (chests, baskets, sticks, hats, bundles, instruments), geographical contexts (climate, landscape, distances, trade routes) and sale techniques (singing, shouting, performing, door-to-door visits, flyers, negotiations) resonated in the goods they distributed. I will argue that there is close connection between the context of itinerant trade and the materiality and function of typical pedlar genres, such as pamphlets, ballads, almanacs, newspapers, dying speeches and penny prints.
